SCSP Programme on “Alternative livelihood options for fishers” at CIFRI, Kochi

CIFRI Kochi Centre organised a training programme under SCSP on 2nd August 2019 at Ajantha auditorium, Valappa Village near Vypeen Boat Jetty. Forty-six Scheduled Caste fishers participated in this SCSP programme. Dr. Rani Palaniswamy, OIC, ICAR-CIFRI Kochi Centre welcomed the SCSP fishers and introduced to them the various CIFRI technologies that have been disseminated for fostering the livelihood of the underprivileged communities. The programme was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Dr. Sunil Mohammed, Principal Scientist & Head of Division, Molluscan Division, ICAR-CMFRI, Kochi. He suggested that the fishers have to choose alternative fishing options which suits them the best and he described on the prospects of molluscan culture in the State. Dr.C. Seema, Fisheries Extension Officer, Kerala State Fisheries Department, Kochi extended her support in disseminating the CIFRI technology. The programme involved lectures taken by Dr. C. Seema on ‘Fisheries schemes and subsidies’, Dr. Deepa Sudheesan on ‘Fish culture systems in Inland open waters’ , Dr. Rajesh, N on ‘Cage culture’ and by Dr. Thankam Theresa Paul and Dr. Deepa Sudheesan on ‘Freshwater fish culture as an alternative livelihood for fishers’. The fishermen actively participated in the programme and the discussion thereafter. The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Deepa Sudheesan. The venue and all the associated paraphernalia for the successful conduct of the meeting was arranged by Shri. S.Manoharan, CTO and Mrs. Usha Unnithan, STO.
