Wetland Fishers of North 24 Paraganas, West Bengal trained : An Initiative for Doubling Fishers’ Income

A four days training programme on “Wetland Fisheries Management for Livelihood improvement” under SCSP was inaugurated by Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI on 8th July 2019 at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore for the farmers of Chamardaha and Beledanga wetlands of North 24 Paraganas district of West Bengal. This district has plenty of wetlands with unexplored potential for fishery development. A total of 42 scheduled caste fishers participated in this capacity building programme from 8th to 11th July 2019. The training programme was aimed at bridging-up the gap in knowledge, skill and attitude of the farmers towards wetland fisheries management. The CIFRI technologies like installation of HDPE pen for insitu rearing of fish seed, strategies of fish seed stocking and harvesting management strategies were described to the fishers for doubling the fish production from the wetlands. The training programme was also having sessions on various aspects of wetland fisheries management which include water and soil chemistry, fish health management, pen culture and feed management etc. Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI addressed the trainees and emphasized on the need of skill development of the fish farmers on various facets of wetland fisheries management to eradicate poverty and malnutrition. He also stressed about the entrepreneurial opportunities in fisheries which can be harnessed with better marketing and business skills. He advised the trainees to put their learning into practice and to disseminate the knowledge gathered from the training among fellow farmers after going back to their native place. Trainees were motivated to work in group to build resilience and have better market and institutional linkage which in turn would augment their income. The training module was consists of lectures, hands on training, group activity, scientists-fishers interactive session and one day of field exposure visit. This capacity building programme was coordinated by Dr. P. K. Parida and Ms. Sukanya Som, Scientists, ICAR-CIFRI.
