HDPE Pen culture for insitu rearing in FANI affected Salia reservoir of Odisha under SCSP programme

ICAR-CIFRI demonstrated HDPE Pen culture in FANI affected Salia reservoir of Odisha for the livelihood improvement of the SC fishers on 29th June 2019. Salia reservoir area was severely affected by cyclone storm “FANI”. In order to improve the livelihood of the affected fishers, ICAR-CIFRI made an attempt to enhance fish production of reservoir through stocking of right sized fish. CIFRI had a detailed discussion with the co-operative society members of Salia reservoir and district officials to increase the present production from 30 tons to 90 tons for the 180 ha reservoir area employing CIFRI technologies. Transportation of big sized fish seed being a challenge, in-situ rearing of fish seed in HDPE Pen developed by ICAR-CIFRI as the stocking material for the reservoir is the best option for production enhancement from reservoir. Two nos of HDPE pen with a size of 0.1 ha each has been installed in Salia reservoir. Previously, ICAR-CIFRI has under took diversified cage culture activity in the reservoir. The demonstration of pen culture in Salia reservoir was made under the able guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI. Dr. Das explained in detail the procedure of pen culture and precautions for better result from this culture practice. Mr. S. P. Bhoi, Dy. Director of Fisheries, Ganjam, Govt. of Odisha along with other district officials were present in the programme. 50, 000 IMC seeds were stocked in the pen during the demonstration. More than 150 scheduled caste fishers participated in the programme. The fishers had an interaction with the team of scientist of ICAR-CIFRI about pen culture and enhancement of production from reservoir. Mr. H. S. Swain and Mr. Mitesh Ramteke coordinated the demonstration programme.
