Mass Awareness conducted for SC fishers of Beledanga wetland of Gopalnagar, North 24 Paraganas
ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute conducted a mass awareness campaign
at Beledanga wetland of Gopalnagar, North 24 Paraganas on30.03.2019 under Scheduled Caste
Sub Plan (SCSP). Gopalnagar area of West Bengal has vast range of wetlands having huge
potential for fisheries development. The Beledanga Fisheries Cooperative has 178 members from
three adjacent villages of the wetland. Therefore, realizing the need of sensitizing the fishermen
of the wetland on scientific and strategic interventions, Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI
took initiative arranged a mass awareness campaign for the fishers. Around 60 fishers
participated in the programme along with their president, secretary and board members of the
cooperative. The programme started with a focused group discussion session with the fishers to
understand their existing situation, problems and probable areas of intervention. Director, ICAR-
CIFRI in his address stressed on the importance of conservation of small indigenous fish species
through efficient management practices and collective approaches for fisheries development to
increase resource use efficiency. He insisted them to adopt improved CIFRI technologies like
pen culture with technical support from CIFRI so as to increase their resource use efficiency and
enhance quality and quantity of fish production from the wetland. He also invited the fishers to
attend capacity building trainings at ICAR-CIFRI to enhance their knowledge and skill for better
fisheries management. The director enthusiastically arranged an interactive session with the
fishers, where he personally clarified the fishers’ queries along with other scientists of CIFRI.
The fishers were motivated to adopt the improved technology and management practices through
intervention of the institute. Dr. P.K. Parida, Coordinator, SCSP, Dr. P. Debroy, Scientist and
Ms. S. Som, Scientist facilitated the programme.
