Training of Trainers (ToT) programme on "Reservoir fisheries management for
employment generation" organized at Bangalore Research Centre
Bangalore Research Centre of ICAR- Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI),
organized a five day, National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) sponsored, Training of
Trainers programme on “Reservoir fisheries management for employment generation” at
ICAR-IIHR, Hessaraghatta, Bangalore from 25 th February- 1 st March 2019. The programme
was conducted under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI (Course Director)
and Dr. Preetha Panikkar, Principal Scientist and Officer In-charge, ICAR-CIFRI Research
Centre, Bangalore (Course Co-ordinator). Sixteen participants from different states viz.
Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Madhyapradesh attended
the programme.
The training programme was inaugurated on 25 th February 2019 by Dr. S. P. Ayyar, Former
Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore. Dr. Preetha Panikkar, OIC, CIFRI, Bangalore has
welcomed the gathering and Mr. M. Karthikeyan, Scientist (SG) proposed vote of thanks.
The training included various lectures by domain experts on different topics mainly focusing
on the main theme Employment Generation and also field visits. Resource persons drawn
from various organizations incorporated, Dr. Hemaprasanth, Scientist-in-charge, ICAR-
CIFA, Regional Research Centre, Bangalore, Dr. K.N. Prabhudeva, Professor & Head, FRIC,
, KVAFSU Regional Research Centre, Bangalore, Dr. B.V. Krishnamurthy, Chief Scientific
Officer, Inland Fisheries Unit, Main Research Station, University of Agricultural Sciences,
Bangalore, Dr. D.S. Krishna Rao, Principal Scientist and Head (Rtd.) ICAR-CIFRI,
Bangalore, Dr. M.R. Raghunath, Pr. Scientist and Officer-in-charge, (Rtd.) ICAR- Central
Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture and Dr. N. Sridhar, Principal Scientist, Regional
Research Centre, ICAR-CIFA, Bangalore. Scientists of ICAR-CIFRI, Dr. M. Feroz Khan,
Mr. M. Karthikeyan and Dr. Ajoy Saha has also delivered lectures during the programme.
The training programme focused on transferring knowledge for generating employment
opportunities through scientific management of reservoir fisheries. The experts have given
presentations on Recent trends in management of culture-based fisheries in Indian reservoirs,
Employment avenues for reservoir fishers, Culture based fisheries for enhancing fish
production from reservoirs, Role of fisheries in rural development in India, Assessment of
spatial distribution of fishes in reservoirs using hydroacoustics, Electronic Data Acquisition
System (eDAS) for reservoirs, Promising cage culture technology, Nutritional strategies for
augmenting productivity and income in reservoir based aquaculture systems, Water and
sediment quality assessment and its link with reservoir fish habitat management fish diseases
and health management and Trophic modelling of reservoirs were discussed in detail during
this five days training programme,. A field visit to Manchanbele reservoir in Karnataka was
arranged on 28 th February 2019, as a part of the training programme to visualize the activities
of a reservoir which is successfully managed through culture based fisheries. The participants
have visited the laboratory facilities of CIFRI and also the Fish farm and hatchery of CIFA,
Bangalore.
On 1 st March the valedictory session was held with Dr. A.E. Eknath, Director (Rtd.) ICAR-
CIFA, Bhubaneshwar as chief guest. The Chiefguest has emphasised the importance of Cage
culture in reservoirs and elaborated the its success at international level and role of CIFRI at
National level. Dr. M. Feroz Khan welcomed the gathering and Dr. Ajoy Saha proposed vote
of thanks. All the participants shared their feedback about the programme and articulated
their keen interest in working together with ICAR-CIFRI in future for the betterment of
fishermen community. The participants were awarded with Certificate of participation by the
Chief Guest.
Participants have felicitated the Scientists, Senior Technical Assistant M.E. Vijayakumar,
administrative and Support staff for their contribution in successfully orgainising this
programme.
