Bangalore Research Centre of ICAR-CIFRI conducted NFDB sponsored skill development programme on “Reservoir Fisheries Management for employment generation”.

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Research Centre, Bangalore, conducted a three day skill development programme on “Reservoir Fisheries Management for Employment Generation” sponsored by National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), at Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu during 5-7 February 2019. The programme was organised under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI (Course Director) and Dr.Preetha Panikkar, Principal Scientist & Officer In-Charge, CIFRI, Bangalore (Course Co-ordinator). The programme was attended by fishers and fish farmers of Krishnagiri dam. Mr. M. Karthikeyan, Scientist (SG), ICAR-CIFRI welcomed the gathering and briefed about the technology generated by ICAR-CIFRI. P. Jeneyferck, Deputy Director of Fisheries, Krishnagiri, inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp. In her inaugural address she emphasised that reservoirs have great potential and utilization of this vast water resources through culture-based fisheries and cage culture will help in generating alternate income to the fishermen. Dr. Preetha Panikkar explained about the role of CIFRI in reservoir fisheries management. Dr. P. Chidambaram, Associate professor, Tilapia Research Centre, Krishngiri disrtict explained about employment opportunities and live fish marketing. Mrs. V. L. Ramya briefed about enclosure culture and introduction of locally important indigenous fishes into culture system for sustainable income generation. Fishers were taken for a field trip to cages in Krishnagiri dam and culture practices were explained to them. Mr. M. Karthikeyan, Mrs. V. L. Ramya and Mrs. Sibina Mol S. coordinated the programme. Mrs. V. L. Ramya proposed vote of thanks to the gathering.
