Hands-On-Training under TSP on Enclosure culture in Inland Open Waters at Karjan Reservoir, Gujarat

Regional Research Centre of ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Vadodara centre conducted a two-day hands-on-training programme on enclosure culture (cage and pen) in Inland open waters for tribal fisherman under TSP programme at Village Movi-Boridra, District Narmada, Gujarat during 28-29 th January 2019. The training programme was designed to give exposure to the tribal fisherman on enclosure culture viz. cage and pen culture. Recently ICAR-CIFRI, Vadodara has installed HDPE pen in the Karjan reservoir under TSP programme to rear fry to fingerlings as stocking materials for the reservoir. The fisherman actively participated and interacted with the scientists and Officials of the State Fisheries Department to clear queries and doubt faced practically. A total number of 68 active tribal fishermen attended the programme.

The training programme was designed for two days, on the first-day inaugural cum theoretical aspects of the enclosure culture were taken care off. Dr. S.P. Kamble, on his welcome speech, mentioned the aspects of enclosure culture for enhancement of Inland open water fish production and productivity. Dr. D. Bhakta has covered the technical aspects for both cage and pen culture. Mr. H.V. Mehta, Assistant Superintendent of Fisheries, Rajpipla attended the programme and discussed the different departmental activities existing under the Fisheries Department for the welfare of the tribal community. The president of the “Karjan reservoir area tribal fisheries co-operative society Ltd.” highlighted the co-operative activities and existing lease system taken from the Department of Fisheries, Government of Gujarat. W.A. Meetei has looked after overall training programme for smooth running and gave the fishers hands-on technical know-how regarding feeding and maintaining of cage/pen walls. Farmers and scientist interaction was conducted and need based advised was provided to the fishers for long term sustainable management of fisheries in the Karjan reservoir.
