NFDB sponsored Skill development programme conducted at ICAR-CIFRI,Barrackpore

A skill development program was organized for 42 fishermen and fisherwomen of Sundarbans region of West Bengal at ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore during 21-23 January 2019 on “Inland Fisheries Management for Livelihood Improvement”. The program is sponsored by National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad, Govt. of India under CSS Blue Revolution Scheme. The training was organized based on the needs of trainee fishermen as Sundarbans has vast range of water resources including many under-utilized canals creating tremendous potential for fisheries enhancement and management. Many of the households in the region have ponds and women participate abundantly in the fishing activities. Therefore, the women comprised majority of the trainees in the programme. The trainees were trained on various aspects of fisheries and other livelihood opportunities like composite fish culture, mono-sex tilapia culture, fish feed and feeding management, disease management etc. A field exposure visit was also arranged for the trainees at the respective research stations at ICAR-NDRI and ICAR-CIFA at Kalyani. The training programme ended with collection of feedback from the institute and a formal valedictory session. The trainees engaged themselves in interaction with the resource persons and clarified their queries. They were also requested to further disseminate their knowledge and learning from the training programme among other fishermen of their region. This training programme is expected to be helpful for the trainees by opening up new income generating and employment opportunities for them aiding to their livelihood security.The training programme was coordinated by Dr. Aparna Roy, Dr.Sajina. A. M., Ms. Pritijyoti Majhi, and Ms. Sukanya Som.
