NFDB sponsored Skill development programme conducted at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore

A skill development program was organized for26 fishermen and 24 fisherwomen of Sundarban at ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore during 18- 20November 2018 on “Small Indigenous fish culture and conservation for livelihood and nutritional security”. The program is sponsored by National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad, Govt. of India under CSS Blue Revolution Scheme. The training was organized based on the need of fishermen as Sundarban has vast water resources creating tremendous potential for culture of Small Indigenous Fishes (SIFs). The trainees were trained on various aspects of SIF culture and conservation which include soil and water chemistry for SIF culture, habits and habitats of important SIFs, SIF culture for livelihood security, economic evaluation of SIF culture, feed and feeding management, fish diseases and therapeutic value of indigenous fishes. Hands on training on water and soil quality analysis and exposure visit to Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS) of the institute were also arranged for the trainees. The women trainees were ‘Hapas’ were also distributed among the fisher women for promotion of SIF culture in small scale. The fisher women also participated in ‘Ranching programme’ under the ‘Namami Gange’ project on the occasion of World Fisheries Day on 20 th November. The training programme ended with collection of feedback from the participants and a valedictory session in which the Director of the institute interact with the trainees and encouraged them to promote SIF culture and conservation in Sundarban area for livelihood and nutritional security. The training programme was coordinated by Dr. Aparna Roy, Ms. Gunjan Karnatak, Ms. NirupadaChanu, Ms. Pragya R Behera and Ms. Sukanya Som.
