ICAR-CIFRI’s relentless effort to support the livelihoods of the ‘Amphan’ affected marginalized community of Deltaic Sundarbans.

ICAR-CIFRI extended the advisory and fisheries inputs to support the Amphan affected 159 beneficiaries of Gosaba and Sagar Island, Sundarban. Due to COVID19 pandemic and lock down situation all the advisory support were given over telephone. About 1000 kg of lime, three tonnes fish feed and 150kg seed were distributed 59 numbers of TSP beneficiaries in Rangabelia, Gosaba, Sundarban. In Sagar Island 380 kg fish seed was distributed to 98 tribal fishers along with 1600kg lime and 5tonnes fish feed.

The super cyclone “Amphan” made its landfall in Indian Sundarbans on 20th May 2020. The devastation was so intense at Sagar Island, Kalitala, and Gosaba of Sundarbans that many areas remained inaccessible 48 hours after the cyclone, making it difficult to distribute relief materials. In Gosaba, the river embankment at Jotirampurghat, Rangabelia has washed away, inundating vast areas of houses, ponds, and agricultural fields. The TSP beneficiaries of Gosaba and Sagar were very much in despair since cyclone Amphan triggered heavy tidal waves from coastal rivers and saltwater inundated ponds and other water bodies killing freshwater fish varieties fishes. Now, it has become a great challenge to mainstream the marginalized tribal community of Sundarbans after this colossal catastrophe in the pandemic situation of COVID-19.

Under the guidance of Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI , tireless effort has been taken to uplift the socio-economics of the rural tribal of Sundarbans in the post Amphan period. Dr. Sanjay Bhowmick, CTO and L. Chakraborty, TO were the architect of the implementation process in the grass root level.
