Training on ornamental fish culture for the SC community of the remote villages of Sundarbans

ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute is executing Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SCSP) programme in Sundarbans. Under SCSP programme 70 ornamental fish FRP tank were distributed by ICAR-CIFRI to the self help group (SHG) of the remote area of Sundarbans Amtali and Kochukhali where most of beneficiaries were women and their livelihood are entirely depend on fisheries and agriculture. The fisheries implements were provided to create an alternative livelihood and increase their earning basket of the rural women. In this context ICAR-CIFRI conducted three days hands on training on aquarium fabrication, ornamental fish breeding, artificial feed preparation and live food culture and aquarium husbandry for the SC community of Amtali and Kochukhali, Sundarbans. The training was organized under Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SCSP) during 9-11 January 2020 for the livelihood improvement of the SC community through capacity building in ornamental fish culture. Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI inaugurated the training programmer and interacted with the trainees and sensitized them about the importance of ornamental fish culture as an alternative livelihood for rural women. The training programme was carried out to strengthen the theoretical and practical skill of the farmers for ornamental fish culture through learning by doing, practical, field exposure visits, ornamental village visit, demonstrations and class room sessions with the involvement of various resource personnel having expertise in ornamental and inland fisheries from ICAR-CIFRI. A total of 17 SC fishers including 10 SC women from Amtali and Kochukhali, Sundarbans participated in the training programme. The training was coordinated by Dr. A.K. Sahoo, Dr. Lianthuamluaia, Mr. Mitesh Ramteke and Mr. H.S. Swain under the guidance of Dr. B.K. Das, Director ICAR-CIFRI and Training Course Director.
