Leveraging Youth for Inland Fisheries Management: Skill Development programme at ICAR-CIFRI in collaboration with NYKS and ICICI Foundation

Inland fishery sector has many untapped potential for employment generation and livelihood security. However, the young generation is shying away from this sector day by day. In the present scenario of job scarcity in the country, being a job creator is wiser decision than being a job-seeker. Therefore, developing business skills in rural sector is of utmost importance today. Realizing the need for leveraging youth for entrepreneurship building in fishery sector, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), Kolkata in collaboration with ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) and ICICI Foundation conducted a five days longs Skill development program on “Inland Fisheries Management” for youths from various places of West Bengal. A total of 33 youths from the age group of 18 to 29 years participated in the programme. They have been trained at ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore during 19th to 23rd September 2019 on various aspects of inland fisheries such as, riverine ecology, canal fishery management, fish health management, ecology of Indian reservoirs, natural fish food organism, water quality management, pond management, ornamental fish culture etc. Besides, hands on practical sessions were arranged on water quality analysis, feed preparation, and identification of fish pathogens and analysis of biotic communities. An exposure visit to East Kolkata Wetland was also arranged for the trainees to orient them with the field situation. While addressing the youth Dr. B. K. Das, Director, CIFRI categorically urged the youths to engage themselves in fishery related income augmenting and profit-making activities. Especially, a lot of opportunities exist in ornamental fish cultivation and business which was highlighted by the Director, CIFRI. He also invited them to participate in the training programmes conducted at CIFRI under different schemes. Dr. A.K.Das, In Charge, Extension and Training Cell and Principal Scientist, CIFRI also took part in discussion. He advised the youths to open aqua-shops in groups which can act as one stop solution for fishery inputs, knowledge support and technology backstopping. CIFRI extended all sort of logistic support for this five-days training. The training program is expected to be highly beneficial for career and life building of the participant youths.
